Emergency Bivy Sac: HomemadeSome backpackers and climbers carry a "space-blanket" for emergencies where they are caught out overnight unexpectedly. Here are a couple of tips. First, in actual emergencies several people I know found these to be too light weight and too effected by wind to be useful. Oddly, the noise they create (crinkley) kept some people awake. To avoid both of these issues I made my own bivouac bag. I purchased an old nylon tent at a garage sale for $5. I cut the nylon floor out of it and sewed it into a retangle about the same shape as a sleeping bag. You can make it as large or small as you see fit. It is relatively light, compact, and would add some comfort and protection from rain and wind in an emergency.
